Between Summer and Fall: Ground Yourself on the Earth

There’s a quiet season that lives between two louder ones. Summer’s fire has had its moment — the long days, the outward energy, the excitement of expansion. Fall hasn’t yet arrived with its cooler air and its invitation to release. Right in between sits the Earth Element, and in Traditional Chinese Medicine, this is exactly where we are right now.
The Earth Element doesn’t get the same attention as the dramatic transitions of the solstices and equinoxes, but it might be the most important pause of the whole year. It’s the late-summer season — the stretch between the summer solstice and the fall equinox — and its job is simple, even if the inner work isn’t: to bring us back down into our bodies. Feet on the earth. Present. Grounded. Before we can move gracefully into fall, we have to land somewhere first.
Why Grounding Matters Right Now
Summer asks a lot of us. It’s a season of yang energy — outward, active, social, bright. By the time we reach late July and August, many of us are running on that momentum without realizing how far it’s carried us from our own center. The Earth Element interrupts that momentum on purpose. It asks us to stop reaching outward for a moment and check in: Are my feet actually on the ground? Am I present in this body, in this moment, or am I still chasing the fire of summer?
This is why I’m devoting my energy medicine classes this month to the Earth Element. We begin on August 5th with Grounded and Present, using energy medicine and movement to come back into our bodies and out of our heads. It’s the foundation everything else this month builds on — you can’t digest or integrate anything if you’re not actually here to receive it.
What Do You Need to Digest?
In TCM, the Earth Element governs the stomach and spleen meridians, and both have a lot to teach us about how we process our lives — not just our food, but our experiences, our relationships, our emotions.
The stomach meridian is about digestion in the fullest sense. What have you taken in this summer — conversations, decisions, disappointments, joys — that you haven’t actually had the chance to process yet? Undigested experience doesn’t disappear. It sits heavy, the way a meal sits heavy when we eat too fast or under stress. On August 12th, in What Do You Need to Digest in Your Life?, we’ll use energy medicine practices to support the stomach meridian and give ourselves permission to actually chew on what we’ve been carrying, rather than swallowing it whole and moving on.
What Do You Need to Integrate?
If digestion is about taking something in, integration is about making it part of who you are. This is the work of the spleen meridian — transforming raw experience into wisdom, nutrients into energy, lessons into growth. The spleen in Chinese medicine is deeply tied to our ability to think clearly, to trust ourselves, and to turn what we’ve learned into something usable.
On August 19th, What Do You Need to Integrate in Your Life? will focus here — on the spleen meridian and on the quiet, often overlooked work of weaving our summer’s experiences into the fabric of who we’re becoming. It’s not enough to just process something once. We have to let it settle in, let it become part of our foundation.
Letting Go and Softening Into Fall
Every season eventually gives way to the next, and the Earth Element’s final task is to help us release our grip on summer with grace rather than resistance. This isn’t abrupt — it’s a softening, a gentle unclenching of the hands that have been holding on to summer’s brightness.
We’ll close out the month on August 26th with Let Go of Summer and Soften Into Fall, using energy medicine to support this transition. Fall’s gifts — clarity, discernment, the courage to release what no longer serves us — can only be received by hands that are open. The Earth Element gives us the whole month of August to practice that opening.
An Invitation
I hope you’ll join me for all four classes this August, whether you’re new to energy medicine or a longtime student of this work. Each class stands on its own, but together they trace a full arc — from grounding, to digesting, to integrating, to releasing — that mirrors exactly what your body and spirit are already trying to do this time of year.
The Earth Element isn’t asking you to do anything dramatic. It’s simply asking you to notice: Where are my feet? What am I holding onto that’s ready to be processed? And what am I ready to let become part of who I am?
