Letting Go with Faith and Inspiration: November’s Focus

As we move deeper into fall, we enter the season of the Metal Element in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Just as trees release their leaves, we too are invited to let go of what no longer serves us. Metal represents strength, clarity, and the wisdom to release gracefully. The art of release unfolds naturally when we nurture faith in our own capacity and awaken to life’s possibilities.

People who embody the metal element tend to be strong, dependable types. They’re orderly and excellent decision makers. But they’re also deep thinkers who understand that change is a natural part of life.

Physical Signs of the Metal Element

When it comes to our bodies, the metal element governs the lungs and the large intestine. Think of it like breathing in the good and letting go of what we don’t need. A balanced metal element means efficient breathing and digestion. An imbalance can manifest as respiratory challenges (frequent colds, coughs, asthma), digestive issues (constipation, bloating), or skin conditions, which TCM considers related to lung health since the skin is considered a “third lung.”

Emotional Dimensions of Metal

Beyond physical health, the metal element is intimately associated with grief. A balanced metal element allows us to process and move beyond losses effectively. Conversely, an imbalance leaves us stuck in feelings of sadness or unable to release past hurts, affecting our overall emotional resilience and capacity to face new challenges.

Practicing Energy Medicine Yoga supports the metal element by encouraging the smooth flow of Qi, particularly through the lung and large intestine meridians. Regular EMYoga sessions or one-on-one Energy Medicine sessions can help balance both the emotional and physical aspects of the metal element, enhancing your overall resilience and capacity to handle life’s ups and downs.

Finding Balance: Key Practices for the Metal Element

Finding balance with the metal element means addressing our physical health and emotional well-being. These lifestyle adjustments are beneficial not only for aligning with the metal element but also for enriching our overall quality of life.

Embrace Letting Go

The essence of the metal element is release. This means learning to let go of negative emotions, beliefs, or physical clutter that no longer serve a positive purpose in our lives. Release grudges and negative feelings. Spend a few moments now imagining the release of negativity with every exhale. Breathe in new, fresh energy.

Allow Yourself to Grieve

Feeling our grief can be difficult, and people often try to avoid it. The Lung, often referred to as the “Tender Organ,” is responsible for taking in the pure Qi (energy) from the air we breathe. Just as it inhales fresh air, the Lung also holds the key to releasing what no longer serves us. It is associated with the release of grief and sadness. By embracing the Metal Element’s energy, we can learn to acknowledge and let go of emotional burdens, fostering a sense of freedom and lightness.

Practice Deep Breathing Daily

Deep breathing exercises significantly benefit our mental and physical health. Breathe in through your nose for four counts, imagining your lungs filling from bottom to top. Hold briefly, then exhale slowly through your mouth for six counts, releasing air from the entire lung. Practice this for at least five minutes each day.

Accept Imperfection

Self-acceptance and appreciation are the paths out of the trap of perfectionism. Focus on all the good qualities that you possess. Accept that you are not perfect; nobody is. Accept that you have done your best.

Respect Yourself

Spend time with people who respect you and who you respect. Consider taking inventory of your relationships and surround yourself with people who build you up, support your dreams and goals, and show up for you when needed. Observe and spend time with people who demonstrate resilience, overcome barriers, and recover well from failure.

Honor Your Integrity

One of the gifts of the metal element is the ability to develop strong values and moral clarity. However, this strength can sometimes tip into rigidity. If you find yourself thinking in absolutes, practice flexibility. Remember that multiple perspectives can coexist, and compromise doesn’t mean abandoning your principles. Accept that the world is not black-and-white and that other people’s opinions are worth respecting.

Meditate Daily

Meditation plays a big role in balancing the metal element, especially practices that focus on deep breathing and mindfulness. These techniques can help in managing emotions like grief, facilitating a process of letting go and emotional cleansing. Insight Timer offers a range of meditations designed to support emotional balance, providing a valuable resource for those looking to enhance their connection to the metal element.

Practice Yoga

A yoga practice with clear and precise instructions that include many chest-opening poses will support the metal element. Increase your pranayama practice (yogic breathing) and your outdoor activities to stimulate your lungs and strengthen your immune system. Join me on Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. Central Time (or by recording after the class) throughout November as we focus on the Metal Element.
